Next Dodge Viper ACR Could Land In 2014: Report

The last Dodge Viper ACR (for American Club Racing) rolled off the assembly line in 2010, boasting the same 600 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque from its V-10 engine as standard Viper models. Weight on ACR models was reduced by up to 90 pounds by gutting the interior, while the suspension and brakes were upgraded for track use.

The car’s functional aero package produced around 1,200 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour, and in September of 2011 a Viper ACR turned a lap time of 7:12.13 on Germany’s fabled Nürburgring circuit.

Depending upon your definition of a “production car,” that could make the 2010 Viper ACR the fastest production car around the ‘Ring, though the ultra-low volume Gumpert Apollo Sport, Radical SR8 and Radical SR8 LM have all pasted up quicker laps.

We’ve heard previous rumors that the new SRT Viper would be built in ACR form as well, but now Motor Trend says it has confirmation from a “high-level” source at Chrysler that the ACR is under development and scheduled for a 2014 release.

Word is that the car would come to market sooner, if tire-supplier Michelin would only sell its Pilot Sport Cup product to SRT. The Viper’s Pirelli tires don’t return the same level of performance, so SRT has requested that Pirelli develop a tire specifically for the Viper ACR, and that takes time.

As for why Michelin reportedly won’t sell its Pilot Sport Cup tires to SRT, the answer is simple: they’re delivered on the range-topping Corvette ZR1, and Michelin isn’t going to endanger its relationship with GM.

Like the previous Viper ACR, the new model isn’t expected to produce more horsepower (to the delight of aftermarket suppliers), but it will serve up track-ready brakes, an adjustable (but track-focused) suspension, functional aerodynamics and weight savings via the deletion of luxury items.

Developing tires is tricky business, so it’s hard to say when the new SRT Viper ACR will hit the market in 2014. The same can be said of price, which, we suppose, will be determined by how many trick parts the new Viper ACR uses.

Can the next Viper ACR best its father’s time around the ‘Ring, or will Chevrolet serve up even more performance in its next Corvette ZR1? Regardless of which car pastes up a faster time, the real winners will be those lucky enough to park these supercars in their garage.

Based on the 2013 Dodge Challenger R/T — America's most affordable V-8 muscle car at $29,995 MSRP — or R/T Plus, the new Challenger R/T Redline adds even more attitude and style with a right-from-the-factory custom look to the brand's iconic coupe.

Following Dodge Challenger's signature A-line bodyside character line, an all-new two-color Redline Red and Graphite stripe runs from behind the front wheel arches to the tail. For a distinctive look, the rear-quarter section of the stripe features the "Redline" name in Red over Graphite color scheme. For a distinctive look, the R/T Redline features a body-color grille surround.

Filling the wheel wells, the Dodge Challenger R/T Redline features 20-inch Black Chrome wheels with a Redline Red lip and inner backbone for a one-of-a-kind look. For even more performance and driving precision at-the-limit handling, the available Super Track Pak adds Goodyear Eagle F1 P245/45R20 three-season performance tires, high-performance brake linings and a lowered ride height.

With its two-color stripe and four available exterior colors, including Billet Silver, Granite Crystal, Bright White and Pitch Black, each new Dodge Challenger R/T Redline will stand out from the crowd. HEMI Power

For the performance enthusiast, the 2013 Dodge Challenger R/T Redline features the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine that delivers up to 375 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque and gets up to 25 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway. When paired with the track-proven Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission, the Dodge Challenger R/T delivers smooth shifts, while delivering even more power through unique performance-tuned dual exhaust and under-floor mufflers with low-restriction bottle resonators. The result, 0-60 mph runs in the low-5-second range and a sinister exhaust growl for the cars left in its rear-view mirror; a trademark of the original Challenger HEMI from more than 43 years ago.

The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine is also available with a five-speed automatic transmission producing 372 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. In addition, this version of the engine includes Chrysler Group's innovative Fuel Saver Technology to seamlessly transition to high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. And for even more control, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters with "sport mode" transmission calibration are included.

For drivers who want even more premium refinement and details, the new Dodge Challenger R/T Redline can also be built on the 2013 Challenger R/T Plus, which includes premium Nappa leather seating in Dark Slate Gray or Radar Red, heated front seats, six Boston Acoustics premium speakers with 276-watt amplifier, ParkSense rear park assist, power heated mirrors, Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with temperature gauge, location specific tire-pressure monitoring and compass, vehicle security alarm, and HomeLink universal transceiver. The 2013 Dodge Challenger with R/T Redline Group is available for ordering now and arrives at dealerships this April 2013 with a U.S. MSRP of $1,995. When configured on the Challenger R/T or R/T Plus models, the MSRPs are $31,990 and $33,990 respectively (both prices exclude $995 destination).

2013 Dodge Dart Mopar

For the fourth time in the same number of years, the gang over at Mopar—Chrysler’s service, parts, and customer-care brand—have pulled a car from the Chrysler Group lineup and massaged it into a limited-edition vehicle to showcase some of their latest developments in technology and performance. Having already performed its magic on a trifecta of V-8–powered rear-wheel-drive models—Dodges Challenger and Charger, and the Chrysler 300—it seems fitting that for 2013, Mopar would turn its attention to one of the Group’s newest members, the Dodge Dart.

Black and Blue

The 2013 Dodge Dart Mopar ’13 will be limited to a run of 500 units, as were its big brothers the Dodge Challenger Mopar ’10 and the Chrysler 300 Mopar ’12; the Charger Mopar ’11 saw a larger production run of 1000. Exterior styling doesn’t deviate too far from the recent Mopar formula. The Dart’s deep-gloss-black body is accented by a pair of unequal-width Mopar-blue racing stripes that run from stem to stern, and the car sits atop 18-inch wheels finished in the same coat of black. Blue is then splashed onto the calipers, part of the Mopar premium brake kit that also includes slotted rotors.

The Mopar ground effects are about as subtle as they get, consisting of a chin spoiler, a decklid spoiler, and a rear diffuser. And exterior nomenclature is limited to a discrete Mopar badge in the crosshair grille and Mopar logos on the center caps of the wheels.

Those looking for a little more flash need only to check out the interior. Night or day, it’s nearly impossible to miss the electrifying Mopar-blue leather driver’s seat we previewed last week, which Mopar says is intended “to keep the emphasis on the driver.” (As opposed to what, moving the steering wheel and pedals to the right side?) The rest of the seating is done in black with contrasting blue stitching. The extroverted interior color scheme includes a blue-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel with matching shift knob, and blue ambient lighting. A sport pedal kit, Mopar carpet floor mats, doorsill guards, and an 8.4-inch touch screen finish off the interior.

Power to the People

The only available powertrain is the Dart’s optional turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed manual transmission, although Mopar claims the mill’s breathing has been enhanced by a performance-tuned exhaust system. Handling was addressed, too, in as much as Mopar lowered the car’s ride height by a quarter of an inch and re-calibrated the steering, it says, for improved performance.

Each of the 500 Dart Mopar ’13 owners will receive a unique owner kit on delivery. Its contents include a personalized plate with vehicle specifications, the car’s date of manufacture, and the unique identification number of the vehicle, all contained in a custom black case.

Production of the 2013 Dodge Dart Mopar ’13 is scheduled to begin at Chrysler’s Belvidere, Illinois, assembly plant this spring. Mopar enthusiasts who happen to be shopping for new Darts will want to call their dealer now.

Dodge Expands Blacktop Package to Durango, Grand Caravan and Journey

What began as an option package for the 2012 Challenger before it was made more available to the 2013 Avenger, Charger R/T and Challenger R/T models, is now being expanded to the rest of Dodge's range sans the Dart sedan.

We’re talking about Dodge's Blacktop Package treatment that is now offered on the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, Durango seven-seat SUV and Journey mid-size crossover, all of which will be on display at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

"Our Blacktop packages have been so well received on Charger, Challenger and Avenger that we’re expanding it to our innovative Grand Caravan, Journey and Durango," commented Dodge boss Reid Bigland. "All three of these Blacktop vehicles offer class-leading attributes with seating for up to seven and a customized one-of-a-kind appearance package starting at just $295 MSRP."

Beginning with the Grand Caravan that will arrive in the second quarter of the year, the Blacktop Package is priced at $595. It is available on the SXT models adding 17-inch rims, a gloss black grille, black headlamp bezels and fog lamps on the outside, plus an all-black interior, including the headliner, silver accent stitching for the upholstery, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Next up is the Durango SUV. Available from the first quarter of the year as a $295 option on the Rallye and R/T models, the Blacktop treatment adds a gloss black crosshair grille and 20-inch aluminum wheels with gloss black center caps.

Finally, the Journey Crossover Blacktop will reach showrooms in the second quarter of the year with a $995 premium over the regular SXT, which Dodge says, represents savings of $400. Exterior appointments include gloss black 19-inch alloy wheels, grille, bezel headlamps, lower front fascia accent and exterior mirrors.

Inside, Journey SXT Blacktop models come with black cloth seats or optionally available black leather heated seats with heated steering wheel, and a standard 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen.

2013 Dodge Dart GT

The Dodge brand dug deep into its rich, nearly 100-year history to name its all-new compact car, the 2013 Dodge Dart, and is again drawing on the storied history for the newest Dodge Dart model.

The sporty Dodge Dart GT model originally made its debut in 1963 and offered drivers enhanced performance and style, including a heavy-duty suspension that delivered improved ride and handling characteristics.

2013 Dodge SRT Viper First Drive

Bobbing and weaving through the vineyard-dotted hill country around Napa, windows down on a perfect fall day, the sun settling just behind the nearest ridge, a massive 8.4-liter, 640-horsepower V-10 growling out an atonal bass note to complement the music flooding out of the stereo, it's easy to gloss over imperfections, forget the odd inconvenience--even forgive one's enemies.

But it's not all rose-colored tarmac from behind the wheel of the 2013 SRT Viper. Unless you're on track, that is.

You see, the 2013 SRT Viper is almost completely different from the old Dodge Viper, and yet it's almost exactly the same.

Rough, loud, and bit short on passenger room in the cabin, the Viper is still very much a rough-and-tumble sort of supercar. It doesn't make many allowances for creature comforts--despite the large, high-res screen mounted front and center in the now-leather-swathed cabin. It certainly looks much better, especially inside, and it is far more technologically advanced (and, in its own way, refined) than the last Viper. But it's still a beast.

The valvetrain of the mid-front-mounted V-10 engine, for example, will become a dear friend--or an unwelcome guest--after just a few minutes in the cabin, especially if you're cruising just above the Viper's preferred near-idle rpm range. A common malady of high-performance mid-engine cars (which the Viper truly is, with the entire block behind the front axles), it's no less noticeable or, at times, annoying, here.

The exhaust note, likewise, will either stir your soul or stir your passenger's ire, drowning conversation beneath its roar under moderate to hardacceleration. That is, of course, provided they're still talking, and not completely absorbed with hanging onto the newly-added passenger grab handle on the center console.

But once you make the transit from your ultra-modern wine-country hotel to the track, in this case Sonoma, you experience a total perspective shift, and you finally understand the Viper. You can now speak its language, and it can speak yours. It's a homecoming.

That's never more evident than when talking with the SRT team behind the Viper. Each and every member, from engineering to communications, is visibly excited by and about the 2013 SRT Viper. These guys and gals are true, dedicated, and highly capable gearheads. And it shows in their product.
