With more than 13,000 taxis traveling a cumulative 500 million miles per year, building a taxi with the utmost durability is critical to the development process. Drawing on its full range of commercial vehicle experience – including providing taxis for municipalities around the world – Nissan will conduct significant validation testing for the Nissan NV200 Taxi prior to the vehicle going on sale. Additionally, as acknowledged by Mayor Bloomberg during the May 2011 announcement, the Taxi of Tomorrow will be the first New York taxi to be crash-tested with taxi equipment installed, including the partition.

Nissan has also partnered with the Braun Corp., the world leader in automotive mobility products, to develop, engineer and produce a creative solution for a wheelchair-accessible taxi in New York. Drawing on Braun’s innovation and experience in the mobility industry, Nissan will offer a mobility solution to New York taxi medallion holders when the taxis go on sale in 2013.

As part of the Taxi of Tomorrow program, Nissan is also working with the City and taxi owners on a pilot program to study the use of zero-emission, electric vehicles as taxis. Nissan will provide six 100-percent electric Nissan LEAFs and three Level 2 charging stations at no charge to taxi owners and New York City to test the electrification of the taxi fleet.

The Nissan NV200 Taxi will be produced in North America at Nissan’s manufacturing facility in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Total manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of the vehicle, with all planned standard features, will be approximately $29,700.

2013 Nissan Sentra

The all-new 2013 Nissan Sentra continues the brand's product onslaught as the third of five all-new vehicles being introduced in a 15-month period.

Like the recently unveiled Nissan Altima and Pathfinder, the redesign of Nissan Sentra focuses on class-above design standards inside and out, as well as efficiency in engineering. The new Sentra is 150 pounds - or five percent - lighter than the outgoing model, yet has slightly larger overall dimensions and more interior room. The lighter and more aerodynamic new Sentra allows Nissan to use a more fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine, which along with the next generation Xtronic CVT® with sub-planetary gear helps deliver a 13 percent improvement in EPA combined fuel economy.

With the FE+ models, Nissan Sentra achieves up to 40 mpg on the highway. Other CVT-equipped models are rated at 39 mpg on the highway. All CVT models achieve a best-in-class EPA rated 34 mpg combined (City and Highway).

"The 2013 Nissan Sentra is the most revolutionary design in the nameplate's 30-year history, a worthy addition to what is without question the most innovative, highest quality, highest value sedan lineup in Nissan history," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. "With the complete redesign for 2013, Sentra is closer in look and feel to Altima than a typical compact sedan. Like Altima, the new Sentra offers best-in-segment attributes, such as high fuel economy and easy-to-use connectivity, that offer real customer value and convenience."

The new Nissan Sentra has a strong family resemblance to the recently introduced 2013 Nissan Altima, both in exterior and interior styling cues and its "class-above style" against competitive vehicles in the compact sedan segment.

Modern, Premium Design

Nissan Sentra's all-new design is elegant, modern and refined, reflecting a "professional" character targeted at upwardly bound buyers who aspire to drive something more premium than some of the other designs in the segment. It adopts Nissan's bold new signature trapezoid-shaped grille and large wraparound headlights with LED accents - the only sedan in the compact segment to offer them as standard equipment. In the rear, LED taillights are also standard, which complements the sophisticated styling.

Compared to the previous design, Nissan Sentra's beltline has been lowered and a new character line has been added that runs from the front fenders, along the sides, and finishes at the sculpted taillights and trunklid, giving the new Sentra a more aggressive stance and enhanced outward visibility for passengers. Other exterior features include chrome door handles and accents, available heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, and available sport front and rear fascias and rear spoiler.

The 2013 Sentra is built on a new platform that is lighter than the previous design, contributing to the new model's more than 150-pound weight reduction. It also helps Nissan Sentra provide one of the largest interior volumes in class, along with ample rear seat legroom and enhanced trunk capacity.

Compared with the previous generation Nissan Sentra, the 2013 model offers a 0.6-inch longer wheelbase (106.3 inches) and a 2.3-inch longer overall length (182.1 inches). The front overhang is shorter and the rear overhang extended. It is slightly lower in height (-0.6 inches) and narrower in width (-1.2 inches) for enhanced aerodynamics, yet offers nearly identical total interior volume (111.0 cubic feet versus the previous 110.8). The coefficient of drag has been significantly reduced to 0.29 from the previous 0.34.

"Sentra has long been known as one of the roomiest sedans in class and the latest iteration is no exception. The fine-tuning of its dimensions has created not only extremely well-balanced exterior proportions but enhanced rear seat legroom and created a larger, more usable trunk space," said Castignetti.

A Premium, Class-Above Interior

Nissan Sentra's sophisticated new look continues inside with a high-quality interior design with materials not usually found in compact vehicles, including soft-touch instrument panel and driver's door armrest, available leather-appointed seating and available Maple wood-tone trim. Along with offering mid-size roominess in a compact-size exterior, the intuitive interior layout emphasizes driver control and class-leading seat comfort for all occupants. The instrument panel curves out towards the doors and features Fine Vision electroluminescent gauges that are backlit even in daylight, providing a high-quality look that is also easy to read.

Rear seat legroom of 37.4 inches is among the largest in class and immediately apparent to occupants, even with the front seats in the rear-most position. The rear seat is a standard 60/40 split folding design, offering versatile access to the 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space (2.0 cubic feet larger than the 2012 Sentra trunk).

Standard interior features include 6-way manual driver's seat, 4-way manual front passenger's seat, front and rear door pockets, front center console with padded armrest and cupholders, rear seat armrest with cupholders, air conditioning with in-cabin microfilter, tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows with driver's one-touch auto up/down with auto reverse, power door locks with auto-locking feature, two auxiliary 12-volt power outlets, remote keyless entry and remote trunk and fuel-filler door releases.

A new Dual Zone Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system is offered for the first time with Nissan Sentra, allowing the driver or front passengers to set their own individual temperature settings.

The standard audio system is an AM/FM/CD system with four speakers. Other available systems include a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD system with 4.3-inch color display, USB connection for iPod® and other compatible devices; and a Bose® Premium audio system with eight speakers and an amplifier that has been specially tuned to either the cloth or leather interior for best performance.

Also available is SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately) and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System.

"Nowhere is the new Sentra's 'class-above' style more evident than in the interior. You notice it the minute you sit in the roomy, comfortable seats and when you touch the high quality materials. And when driving you notice the extra attention paid to isolating noise, vibration and harshness from entering the cabin," said Castignetti. "And that's before you even get into the various advanced technology features that you usually don't expect in a compact sedan segment vehicle."

NissanConnect with Navigation and Other Clever Technology

Like the new Altima, the 2013 Nissan Sentra offers a major step forward in technology that helps owners stay connected. An all-new version of the Nissan Navigation system is available. NissanConnect with Navigation includes a Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant that reads incoming text messages and allows drivers to reply without taking their hands off of the steering wheel.

The system also offers Pandora® radio capability, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth® and a large 5.8-inch touch-screen display. The Navigation System includes NavTraffic and NavWeather functions (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), along with POIs powered by Google™ and Google™ Send-to-Car functions. The Navigation's map views now features warnings for curves and speed limit information.

Other available technology ranges from the RearView Monitor and Nissan Intelligent Key® with illuminated push-button ignition switch to the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with Easy Fill Tire Alert feature. If air is being added or removed from a tire, the system signals the user when the recommended tire pressure has been reached by sounding the horn.

New 1.8-liter Engine and Advanced CVT

As expected from a ground-up redesign, the new Nissan Sentra features an all-new engine and CVT transmission. Now displacing 1.8-liters, Sentra's advanced DOHC 4-cylinder engine offers a longer stroke than typical engines in its class, resulting in improved combustion speed and efficiency. The engine is equipped with a twin Continuously Variable Timing Control (CVTC) system which modulates both the intake and exhaust valve opening time (similar to that used on the flagship Nissan Maxima).

The engine's internal friction has been reduced, improving efficiency. The DLC creates about half the friction of previous coatings. In addition, the valve springs are shaped similar to a beehive, with a smaller diameter towards the top - reducing inertia weight, improving valvetrain efficiency and smoothing engine operation. The engine is rated at 130 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque.

The new engine is matched with a new-generation Xtronic CVT® (a 6-speed manual is available in the base Sentra S model). The new CVT features a host of enhancements (versus the previous CVT) that contribute to an improvement in fuel efficiency and lower vehicle weight. It also offers a wider gear ratio of 7.3:1 through use of a sub-planetary gear and smaller pulleys, resulting in high-speed fuel efficiency at low rpm and responsive acceleration. Fuel economy is rated at 30 miles per gallon City, 39 miles per gallon Highway and a class-leading 34 miles per gallon combined with the CVT.

"In the race for fuel economy bragging rights sometimes what gets lost in the mix is drivability. Nissan Sentra's new engine and advanced CVT design are perfectly matched to provide the best of both mpg and driving enjoyment - smooth, quiet and efficient operation around town or highway cruising, responsive acceleration and excellent mpg and driving range," said Castignetti.

The new Nissan Sentra also features an independent strut front suspension with stabilizer bar, torsion beam rear axle with integrated stabilizer bar, power-assisted vented front disc/rear drum braking system (4-wheel disc brakes are available), and vehicle-speed-sensitive electric power steering. Available wheels and tires include 16-inch steel wheels with full covers with 205/55R16 size all-season tires or 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 205/50R17 all-season tires.

In addition to the Nissan Sentra S model's long list of standard features, Sentra SV models add cruise control, two additional speakers, illuminated steering wheel audio controls, vehicle security system and premium cloth seating and door trim.

The Nissan Sentra SR adds a sportier appearance, starting with 17-inch forked 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, sport front and rear fascias, sport front grille, lower body side sill extensions, rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light, fog lights and chrome exhaust tip finisher. Inside, the Sentra SR includes sport silver interior trim, premium sport cloth seats and driver's seatback pocket.

The top-of-the-line Nissan Sentra SL adds 17-inch split 7-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, Smart Auto headlights, fog lights, heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, Nissan Intelligent Key®, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, 6-speaker audio system with 4.3-inch display, and Sirius XM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately).

Additional Sentra SL equipment includes leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever knob, Maple wood-tone trim, Dual Zone Automatic Temperature Control (ATC), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with Easy Fill Tire Alert and more.

A Range of Well-Equipped Models

The 2013 Nissan Sentra is offered in a selection of well-equipped S, FE+ S, SV, FE+ SV, SR and SL trim levels. All models come with standard Xtronic CVT®, except the base Sentra S that is available with a choice of 6-speed manual or CVT.

The NissanConnect with Navigation system, leather-appointed seats, heated front seats, rear disc brakes, power sliding glass moonroof and RearView Monitor are among the additional features available with the various equipment packages.

"From front LED accents to rear LED taillights and every inch in between, the all-new 2013 Sentra serves notice to compact sedan buyers that the Nissan Sentra is stepping up in style and stepping up in desirability," said Castignetti. "In what has become one of the most competitive segments in the industry, Sentra is ready to take on all comers."

2013 Nissan Pathfinder

Admittedly late to the party, can Nissan regain its place in a radically changed sport-utility market? That’s the big question the maker faces as it rolls out an all-new version of the long-running Pathfinder.

The new model is more than just a face-lift, in fact, more than the usual redesign.  The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder evolves from a classic, truck-based body-on-frame ute to a car-like unibody-based crossover.  The move has significant advantages, shaving about 500 pounds of mass to deliver a more nimble ride and fuel economy.

But it also raises the possibility that classic SUV buyers might turn up their noses.  On the other hand, the market for classic, truck-like utes has all but vanished, so the bigger question is whether Nissan can regain the buyers who’ve migrated to competing products, such as the latest-generation Ford Explorer, that previously made the SUV to CUV migration.

Of course, it helps that Pathfinder has a long-running reputation for reliability.  It’s long been a go-too choice for buyers looking for rugged, versatile and dependable transportation. And the good news for those looking to come back to the fold is that despite the fundamental design changes, it will continue offering 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, as well as three-row seating – and substantially better mileage.

One sacrifice may be in terms of extreme off-road capabilities.  During a day-long drive in Northern California, Nissan provided the opportunity to spend some time on a relatively steep, if not excessively challenging off-road course. The new all-wheel-drive version of the 2013 Pathfinder would have been fully up to the challenge but for a couple modest reservations.

Without a low gear range and the lack of the Hill Descent Control found on many competing models, we had to work the brakes a bit more than optimal on the downward leg.  That and Hill Hold, for up-hill climbs, would be welcome additions, both on and off-road.  But to be clear, while the Pathfinder isn’t a rock climber, it’s quite capable of navigating anything the average motorist will likely run into.

On the whole, the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder makes the transition from off-road hellion to family vehicle with a measured amount of aplomb. It’s matured quite nicely.

The ride is certainly more refined as the head-tossing roll, which is a familiar drawback in body-on-frame SUVs has been all but eliminated. In addition, the Pathfinder can stay flat in curves or during lane changes, making the vehicle more maneuverable both in on-road cross country trips or in city driving.

The Pathfinder’s electric power-assisted hydraulic steering is now standard, and has the dual benefit of both helping improve fuel economy and responsiveness. Twin tube shock absorbers soak up bumps while maintaining a sporty drive feel.   The new Pathfinder also features 4-wheel vented disc brakes with ABS with electronic brake force distribution and electronic stability control.

Overall, the ute’s ride handling is quite civilized and, dare we say it, out on the highway the Pathfinder comfort level approaches sedan levels.

All 2013 Pathfinders come equipped with a 260-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine matched with a next-generation Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission). While it doesn’t boast quite the muscle of the past generation’s optional V-8, we expect few will miss the bigger powertrain. One reason is that the lighter 2013 Pathfinder is nearly as quick with the smaller V-6.

While the classic image might suggest buyers want a ute like Pathfinder for off-roading or towing, the reality is far different, which explains why the Nissan model has always been offered with the choice of all-wheel-drive or, in generations past, rear-wheel-drive.  The new model’s options will be either front-drive or the updated intelligent all-wheel-drive system which impressed us on the off-road course (save for the previously noted lack of Hill Descent Control).

The new exterior design is softer than the classic, boxy Pathfinder.  It may not click with some classic ute customers but is more rugged-looking, by a longshot, than the Nissan Murano. (And for those who still want a true truck-truck, there’s always the squared-off XTerra.

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is offered with 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are available with the top-line Platinum model.

The all-new interior design includes premium seating materials in all three rows. The new Advanced Driver-Assist Display, located in the center of the instrument cluster, features a 4-inch color display and utilizes natural-looking 3D-effect graphics. An available 8-inch touch-screen monitor, mounted in the middle of the instrument panel, provides intuitive interaction with a variety of vehicle systems.

But for family buyers, a big plus will be the Pathfinder’s new EZ Flex seating.  They make it far more easy to climb into the back row — which is suitable for adults, incidentally, albeit not for a cross-country drive. The seating system can even be operated with a child safety seat installed in the second row, where competitive products usually require you remove the child seats before someone can climb in back.

That includes control of the Nissan Navigation System Independent strut front suspension with stabilizer bar. The rear suspension uses a multi-link design with a stabilizer bar.

A range of available amenities are also offered, including heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, programmable Nissan Intelligent Key®, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, 13-speaker Bose® Premium Audio system, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control, RearView Monitor, Remote Engine Start, Tri-Zone Entertainment System and Dual Panorama Moonroof.

The Pathfinder is also equipped with the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (including dual-stage front supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and a roof-mounted air curtain system for rollover protection.

Nissan has been on a mission to dominate its competitors in the mileage category and that drive continues with the launch of a class-leading 2013 Pathfinder rated at 26 miles per gallon highway,20 miles per gallon city and 22 mpg combined for the 2WD model.  The all-wheel-drive Pathfinder yields 25 mpg highway, 19 mpg city and 21 mpg combined.

Prices for the Pathfinder officially start at $28,270 but the price ladder moves inexorably up with each of four different grades, topping out at $41,000.

The new Pathfinder does have a few flaws, but they are modest and few in number.  Though a sliver of today’s ute buyers might turn elsewhere in search of a “truck-truck,” that’s not where the market is trending and, even so, the sacrifices are slight. For the majority of today’s customers, the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is likely to hit the sweet spot.

2013 Nissan Juke Nismo

First shown as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show and first unveiled in production trim at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo has just had its first in-person meeting with the Autoblog team at the Paris Motor Show. While not quite as extreme as its Juke R brother – not having a GT-R drivetrain kind of takes the edge off – the Juke Nismo nonetheless kicks the standard car up a few notches to become even more of an enthusiast's plaything than a quasi-crossover.

2013 Nissan Juke Nismo

With the laying on of hands from Nismo, Nissan's in-house performance tuning and motorsports arm, this Juke benefits from a host of improvements that up its performance game. The changes begin with a complete Nismo aero package that includes new front and rear bumpers, wider wheel arches, side skirts, rear spoiler and front grille. Eighteen-inch alloys wheels get tucked under those new fenders, while the interior benefits from a lavish swathing of grippy Alcantara on the new sport seats and steering wheel.

Nissan says that the Juke's direct-injected turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder has been modified for Nismo duty, presumably for more power, though the company is still keeping tight-lipped about new power figures. The 1.6-liter as it stands in the base Juke produces a healthy 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, but even if the engine weren't upgraded, Nismo has also addressed performance from a handling perspective by fitting the Juke with a stiffer suspension and revised steering, along with tweaking its traction control and torque vectoring systems.

Launching in Europe early next year, the Juke Nismo will then be made available in Japan before finally making its way to North America at a yet-to-be-determined later date. Pricing is still a mystery as well, but it's safe to say the Nismo will probably be at least a few thousand dollars over the standard model.

Considerably lower weight, a longer wheelbase, a wider track and larger wheels significantly enhance the mid-engine sports car's driving dynamics yet further, already far and away the best in its class, supported by the new electro-mechanical power steering. As an additional boost to driving dynamics, Porsche offers the Sport Chrono Package as an optional extra for the Boxster, featuring dynamic transmission mounts for the first time. Also new in the Boxster is Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear axle differential lock.

The new Boxsters boast superior performance as well as being up to 15 per cent more fuel-efficient. They boast ultra-modern, direct fuel injection, six-cylinder engines and all variants get by with less than nine litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, the Porsche Boxster with PDK even managing with less than eight litres. The most important data at a glance:

Porsche Boxster: 2.7-litre boxer engine with 265 hp (195 kW); rear-wheel drive, six-speed manual transmission, optional seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK); acceleration 0 - 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, with PDK in 5.7 seconds (5.5 seconds with Sport Chrono Package); top speed 264 km/h, with PDK 262 km/h; fuel consumption (NEDC) 8.2 l/100 km, CO2 192 g/km; with PDK 7.7 l/100 km CO2 180 g/km.

Porsche Boxster S: 3.4-litre boxer engine with 315 hp (232 kW); rear-wheel drive, six-speed manual transmission, optional seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK); acceleration 0 - 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, with PDK in 5.0 seconds (4.8 seconds with Sport Chrono Package); top speed 279 km/h, with PDK 277 km/h; fuel consumption (NEDC) 8.8 l/100 km, CO2 206 g/km; with PDK 8.0 l/100 km CO2 188 g/km.

Never before in the history of the Porsche Boxster was a change of generation so comprehensive and so clearly apparent at first glance: The change in proportions is a lasting one. For example, the wheelbase has increased by 60 millimetres and the front track width by up to 40 millimetres and at the rear by up to 18 millimetres, as a result of which the wheels align flush with the body. The windscreen is flatter and set approximately 100 millimetres further forward; all in all the Boxster is up to 13 millimetres lower. Together with its convertible top line extended far to the back, the new Boxster cuts a very elegant silhouette. Another factor contributing to its sportier appearance is that the body is a mere 32 millimetres longer than before, while at the same time the overhang at the front has been reduced by 27 millimetres - the Porsche Boxster remains the compact roadster.

Typical of the enhanced design is the shoulder line, which runs from the strongly upward curving front wing into the rear side section and which also accommodates the exterior mirrors, now in the vicinity of the upper edge of the door. Particularly expressive and characteristic is the new dynamic indentation in the door, which guides the intake air to the striking intake in the rear side section: you can see where the roadster's heart beats.

The new Porsche Boxster's front-end is dominated by the large lateral radiator openings and the headlights. Both the halogen headlights, standard for the new Boxster, and the new Bi-Xenon headlights, standard for the Porsche Boxster S, were completely redeveloped. The headlights, also redesigned, with daytime driving and position lights in LED technology, are integrated above the striking air intakes.

The rear end of the new Porsche Boxster models has been completely redesigned: there is no longer any convertible-top compartment lid, rear wing and lights are linked by a prominent edge spanning the entire vehicle width and the central lamp unit located beneath it combines the rear fog light and reversing lights in one flat strip. The new tail lights, all in LED technology, are perfectly integrated into the rear apron, with their shape curving around the corner of the car. The redesigned tailpipes complete the deep, centred look. This is further emphasised by the diffuser, which spans the width of the vehicle. A characteristic feature of the Boxster is an oval tailpipe; the Boxster S has a twin-flow double tailpipe.

The 2013 GT-R model will also be available in North America, Europe, and then subsequently to other regions from January 2013 onwards.

Engine

Sharper mid-range engine response and improved high-end acceleration.

The incorporation of high-output injectors that more precisely control fuel injection improve mid-range engine response and acceleration at higher rpms.

Specially-developed orifice to the relief valve have been added to the turbocharger bypass; these suppress the rapid decrease of the forced injection pressure, helping to sustain acceleration at high rpms.

By adding a specially-designed baffle plate to the oil pan, oil pressure is better stabilized while rotational friction within the oil pan is reduced, especially during high-performance driving.

Motul Competition Oil is offered as an engine oil option at Nissan dealers due to the many requests from GT-R customers who frequently drive their cars at circuit.
