2013 Goodwood FoS Central Feature To Mark 50 Years Of The Porsche 911


We’re starting to lose count of all the automotive anniversaries taking place this year, but one of the most significant is the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 sports car.

Clearly Porsche has a lot planned to mark the occasion but so do organizers of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, an event that in 2013 is also celebrating its own 20th anniversary.

Each year during summer, the grounds outside Goodwood House in Goodwood, England, plays host to some of the most exciting, unique, and historic cars of the past and present.

Also each year, a gigantic sculpture celebrating a theme is unveiled.

Organizers of the festival have now confirmed that 2013’s sculpture will honor the 911. They say it’s only appropriate, as the iconic sports car is one of only a few cars that have featured at every single Goodwood Festival of Speed, from the first event in 1993--when an unexpectedly high 27,500 enthusiasts turned up--to the 185,000+ visitors that attended the event last year.

In addition to the sculpture, a procession of racing and road-going 911s will also be appearing, and no doubt they will be attacking the 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb, spitting gravel sideways around the Forest Rally Stage, or sitting serenely at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours lawn.

There will also be several other historic Porsche models present, including the 356, 908, 917 and 962.

Audi R8 V8 Versus Porsche 911 Carrera 4S on the Track

Take a look at the Volkswagen Group's vast lineup of cars and you will be hard pressed to find two vehicles competing for the same buyers that are so different to each other.


On one side, you have the recently updated Audi R8, which sports a 424hp (430PS) 4.2-liter naturally breathing V8 engine positioned right behind the driver linked to an all-wheel drive system.

It’s rival from Stuttgart, continues the tradition of the Porsche 911 with a flat-six engine sitting on top of the rear axle, and which in the case of the all-wheel drive 4S, has a displacement of 3.8-liters and an output of 394hp (400PS).

British magazine Autoexpress brought the two rivaling sports car together to see which one is faster and better on a racing track. See what they came up with in the video after the break.

The all-new 2014 Porsche Cayman Mk3 Coupe was unveiled today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.  As expected, the new Cayman coupe is virtually identical to the Boxter roadster (because that’s what it’s based on) released earlier this year; and that’s a good thing.

The 2014 Cayman coupe is a lot more elegant than the car it replaces and the roof doesn’t look like an afterthought, it goes well with the rest of the car.  According to the German car maker, the new Cayman is a 3rd generation car; I guess they considered the minor facelift they gave the Cayman a few years ago, the 2nd generation.  We don’t really care what generation it’s called, all we care about is the specs, which can be found below.

The 2014 Porsche Cayman coupe is powered by a 2.7 liter 6-cylinder boxer engine (replacing the 2.9 liter unit) producing 275 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 213 pound-feet (289 Nm) of torque at 4,500 rpm.  The 2014 Cayman S is powered by a 3.4 liter 6-cylinder boxer engine producing 325 HP at 7,400 rpm and 272 pound-feet (369 Nm) of torque at 4,500 rpm.

The base Cayman coupe equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission accelerates to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds, cars equipped with the 7-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission get to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds, and 5.4 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.  The Cayman S reaches 62 mph in 5.0 seconds with the 6-speed manual transmission, 4.9 seconds with the PDK transmission, and 4.7 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.

The interior has also been upgraded, it’s now inline with the rest of the Porsche interior which have been a huge step forward over most of the previous offerings from Porsche.
The new Porsche Cayman coupe is 66 pounds (30 kg) lighter, has a 40% stiffer body, and is 15% more fuel efficient than the car it replaces.  The car is also lower and longer than its predecessor.  The Cayman was already a fun car to drive; with lighter weight, lower center of gravity, and more power, it’ll make for a hell of a fun ride.

The 2014 Porsche Cayman coupe will be available in U.S. showrooms in early 2013 with a starting price of $52,600 for the base model and $63,800 for the Cayman S.  Prices will be considerably higher in European markets.

Fifth Gear's Season 22 Premiere Airs Next Monday, Vicki Fights Jets With a Boxster S

You wait ages for the new season of a new TV car show and, typically, two come along at the same time. After Top Gear’s premiere on January 27 on BBC, Fifth Gear’s debut episode of the 22nd season will air in a week’s time, on Monday, February 11 on the Discovery Channel.

The first two teasers about one of the first episodes’ stories are now available. They include Vicki Butler-Henderson, a very yellow Porsche Boxster S, an airfield runway and the world’s largest civilian aerobatic display team.

It’s the French-based Breitling Jet Team, which flies seven Aero L-39 “Albatros” jets. The L-39 is a Czech-built trainer that has been produces in nearly 2,800 units and has served with 30 air force units around the world.

As it is being replaced by the newer L-159, many have been sold to civilians; in fact, they are very popular in the States, too, due to their relatively low cost, which ranges between US$200,000-300,000, and probably the most famous owner is auto industry exec Bob Lutz.

2014 Porsche Cayman


It is built for driving through bends like few other sports cars can: the new Porsche Cayman sets new standards in its class for driving performance with a longer wheelbase, all-round new chassis and lower weight. The two-seater, newly developed from the ground up is - after the 911 Carrera and Boxster - the third sports car model series from Porsche to feature innovative lightweight body design.

The new Cayman is up to 30 kg lighter, depending on the specific model and equipment, and it consumes up to 15 per cent less fuel per 100 km than the previous model - despite higher engine and driving performance.

Porsche is also upgrading the Cayman with new optional features. For example, the sport coupé is now available with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) for the first time which controls the distance to the car ahead in traffic and vehicle speed, as well as a specially developed Burmester sound system. Another new feature for the Porsche Cayman is the optional Entry & Drive keyless system that can be factory-installed.

Design: New proportions, prominent lines

The new Porsche Cayman is more distinctive than ever. Its proportions are new, and yet it is clearly a Porsche sport coupé; an extended wheelbase with shorter overhangs and 18- and 19-inch diameter wheels with larger rolling circumference are identifying visual characteristics of the car's more enhanced driving performance. Its styling is marked by precise lines and razor-sharp sculpted edges. They emphasise the car's low, extended silhouette with the windscreen shifted forward and the roof line that reaches far back. Typical of the more advanced styling is the shoulder line, which runs from the wings - which flare strongly upwards - towards the rear side panels. The door mirrors are now positioned near the top shoulder. Especially expressive and characteristic are the dynamic recesses in the doors, which guide induction air into the distinctive air scoops on the rear side panels and then directly to the engine. This offers the most prominent visualisation of the basic concept of the mid-engine.

From the front end, the new Cayman is marked by its dominant cooling air inlets, which increase in size towards the sides of the car. Integrated in them, far outboard, are the round front lights with four-point daytime running lights or position lights, an unmistakable identifying feature of the new Cayman. Just as unique to the new generation of the sport coupé are the large, low rear lid made of aluminium and the rear section with its wrap-around edges. At the upper end of the rear window, an LED brake light spanning the entire window width warns traffic behind. Mounted directly to the rear lid is the thin blade of the rear spoiler, which - in contrast to that of the Boxster - is higher and deploys at a steeper angle. The overall appearance of the Porsche Cayman is more independent than before, and it is well-differentiated from the previous model.

Six-cylinder with high-revving concept: the heart of an athlete

Porsche is implementing two exceptional sport engines in the Cayman, which combine ample torque with high power in the upper engine speed range. One consequence of this high-revving concept is that it enabled a 0.2 litre reduction in base engine displacement compared to the previous model, and yet it has a higher power output.

With its specific power of 101.6 hp/litre, the 2.7-litre engine is the first Cayman to break the magic 100 hp per litre displacement barrier for sports car engines. Both engines now produce their maximum nominal power at 7,400/min; it was 7,200/min previously. Not only were peak powers increased by 10 hp to 275 hp (202 kW) in the Cayman and by five hp to 325 hp (239 kW) in the S-model; their two power curves also lie above those of the previous engines, which means that overall the six-cylinder engines produce more power at identical engine revs.

The new engines induct their air from the left and right air scoops. In the 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine of the Porsche Cayman S, a switching resonance flap improves cylinder fill, providing high torque at low revs as well as a uniform torque curve. Both engines feature variable valve timing and lift (VarioCam Plus) on the intake side for optimal timing in charge changes.

Intelligent efficiency: Electrical system recuperation, thermal management, coasting function

The flat-six cylinder engines - positioned in front of the rear axle - make the two-seat Porsche cars prime examples of efficient performance. The engines of both models are up to 15 per cent more fuel-efficient due to their petrol direct injection, thermal management, electrical system recuperation and auto start/stop function.

Key components for improving efficiency are electrical system recuperation and map-controlled thermal management of engine cooling. In electrical system recuperation, the battery is charged more intensively during braking and coasting phases. In turn, alternator charge current can be reduced when the battery is fully charged.This reduces the load of the internal combustion engine in acceleration phases, because it does not need to output as much power to charge the battery. Thanks to intelligent control of the combined engine and transmission cooling systems, both engines reach their operating temperatures more quickly, which results in better combustion under part-load with less friction.

In conjunction with the PDK transmission, the new Cayman shares a feature with the Boxster and the 911 Carrera that follows the principle of generating engine power only when it is actually needed: the coasting function. The coasting function enables decoupled coasting, in which the engine runs in neutral with low fuel consumption. In practice, this results in optimal savings of up to one litre fuel per 100 km with an anticipatory style of driving. Standard six-speed manual transmission, PDK is an option

The transmission is also crucial for driving performance, comfort and fuel economy. In the new Porsche Cayman models, a standard six-speed manual transmission is employed; its gear ratios are optimally laid out for the engine's unique characteristics. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is also available as an option. It offers seven gears and shifting without any interruption in propulsive power, and it enables faster sprints and better fuel economy.

The new Cayman models now offer a Sport button as standard that lets the driver choose between sport-oriented tuning and comfortable tuning that is optimised for fuel efficiency. In Sport mode, the electronic engine management system makes the engine respond even snappier, with more direct dynamic response of the engine. In vehicles with PDK, automatic mode results in later upshifts and earlier downshifts. Moreover, the start/stop function and coasting function are deactivated.

The PDK is precisely tuned to the vehicle dynamics of the new Cayman. An example: in manual mode, it enables controlled drifts with the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) deactivated - assuming a suitably protected roadway. Detection of the yaw angle and steering input angle initiates prevention of upshifting and permits this very special kind of driving fun.

Option: Sport Chrono package with dynamic transmission mounts

The optional Sport Chrono package offers a very wide spread of gear ratios ranging from sporty tuning - e.g. for circuit courses − to ride comfort in everyday use.It also includes dynamic transmission mounts. It delivers the best possible drive-off acceleration in conjunction with PDK and the Sport Plus button with the Launch Control function. This shortens the sprint from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 s compared to normal mode. The Sport Plus button also activates the PDK "race course" shifting strategy. For even better driving performance and ride comfort, the Sport Chrono package provides dynamic transmission mounts. They alter their stiffness and damping as a function of the specific driving situation. With a hard setting of the mounts, for example, the drivetrain's moment of inertia is significantly reduced when steering into a bend and in quickly alternating bends, which minimises rear body press. Its effects are similar to those of motorsport cars, in which the engine is rigidly mounted to the body with bolts, resulting in more stable and precise handling.

New chassis system for even better handling

The driving performance of the Porsche Cayman is extraordinary. More than ever, the interplay of the mid-engine concept and chassis tuning assures it the top position in its class. The fundamental geometry creates ideal conditions for this performance: a 60 mm longer wheelbase for greater stability at very high speeds, a wide track width at both axles for additional driving stability and agility in bends and larger diameter tyres for even better road grip up to the limits of performance.

Porsche engineers placed high priority on tuning of the Cayman's chassis, but not only with the goal of improving driving performance and agility, but to simultaneously improve comfort and everyday practicality as well.

Revised PASM with extended sensors

The new generation of the optional PASM active damping system extends the driving performance range of the Cayman more sustainably than ever. The reason: four additional vertical sensors at the front and rear wheels enable even better and more finely tuned control. Optimally controlled damping improves the vehicle's road grip, offering greater driving stability, more comfort, enhanced performance and shorter braking distances. Just as before, the driver can use the PASM chassis control button on the centre console to choose between the two modes "Normal" and "Sport". The system also acts as a function of the specific driving situation, so that driving fun is not compromised: in smooth motorway driving, for example, only moderate damping forces are required. In a sporty style of driving, on the other hand, high damping forces improve road grip and car body control.

Quick and efficient reactions: two versions of electromechanical steering

Electromechanical power steering is also replacing the previous hydraulic system in the Porsche Cayman. Its high performance lets drivers experience the agility of the Cayman even more intensively. At the same time, the new system offers fuel economy benefits compared to conventional steering, reducing fuel consumption by at least 0.1 l/100 km. It also enhances comfort and safety through auxiliary functions. The driver gets direct feedback via the steering wheel, and negative or unnecessary noise is filtered out.

As an option, the power steering "Plus" version of electromechanical steering can be ordered, which enhances steering comfort with extra power assist up to 50 km/h. Parking and manoeuvring in particular are more smooth and comfortable - with lower steering forces. This system improves steering torque and steering wheel return to centre position at lower vehicle speeds.

More traction, better vehicle dynamics in bends: Porsche Torque Vectoring

Building upon the capabilities of the PASM chassis, the optional Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) system is able to increase the driving performance potential of the Cayman even further. PTV is the intelligent interaction between the rear differential lock with braking interventions on selected wheels, an added function of Porsche Stability Management (PSM). Essentially, PTV improves the vehicle's steering response and steering precision by targeted brake interventions at the rear wheel located on the inside of a bend. The braking torque is activated as soon as the steering wheel is turned. The results: improved performance in bends as the turn is initiated. Then the rear differential lock significantly improves traction capabilities when accelerating out of the bend.

Brakes with extra power

Because of the car's enhanced driving performance, the brake system of the Cayman has been made more powerful as well - that goes without saying at Porsche. Along with equipping the system with stiffer front brake callipers, optimising brake pad design and providing a larger brake contact surface, improvements were made in cooling the brake discs as well. Furthermore, the new Porsche Cayman S has larger front brake discs that originate from the 911 Carrera. To improve safety in traffic and provide a better warning to vehicles behind, the brake lights of all Cayman models pulsate as soon as ABS control is activated. As in previous models, the exceptionally high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system is available as a motorsport-proven option. With this system, 350 mm diameter brake discs are used at the front and rear wheels of all models. The PCCB brake callipers are also painted yellow, and a new six-piston calliper from the 911 Carrera is used at the front wheels.

Larger wheels, low rolling resistance tyres

The new Cayman models ride on wheels and tyres that are now one inch larger in diameter than on the previous model. Standard now are customised 18- and 19-inch Porsche Cayman wheels, which give the sport coupés better lateral stability and handling properties. Optional wheels for the new Cayman include the alternative 20-inch Carrera S wheels, 20-inch Carrera Classic wheels in bi-colour look and the new 20-inch Sport Techno wheels from the Exclusive programme. The standard tyres are optimised for low rolling resistance, they feature a typically high level of Porsche performance in terms of handling and braking distance, and they are low in weight. A seven per cent reduction in rolling resistance compared to the previous models contributes towards reducing fuel consumption.

Lighter, stiffer, sportier

The body of the new Porsche Cayman is an entirely new development based on the body-in-white of the Boxster. The results: The bottom line is that innovative lightweight body design with mixed aluminium-steel construction has reduced body-in-white weight by around 47 kg. At the same time, the car's static torsional rigidity was boosted by 40 per cent. In other words, the Cayman drives more precisely than ever before.

Extra features, larger glass surfaces and larger wheels offset some of the weight savings, yet the DIN weights of all sport coupés are lighter than those of previous models, and a standard Porsche Cayman S weighs 30 kg less.

In its new lightweight body design, Porsche only uses steel where it is essential. On the other hand, wherever lightweight metals can be used, they are the preferred choice. For example, die-cast aluminium, aluminium sheet, magnesium and high-strength steels are used, and all materials are tailor-made for specific purposes in the body, ensuring very high rigidity values while minimising material usage. Around 44 per cent of the new Cayman body-in-white consists of aluminium, e.g. the front body, floor and rear body, the doors and the front and rear bootlids.

Compared to the previous model, aerodynamic lift was further reduced at both axles, which leads to greater driving stability at high speeds. Among other features, a new front spoiler lip significantly reduces front axle lift. At the rear axle, the new rear wing combined with a spoiler lip running across the entire width also makes a crucial contribution towards reduced lift. The wing is optimally integrated in the rear body with a curved shape, and it can be deployed either automatically or manually. With its 40 per cent larger effective area, it generates more groundforce than the spoiler of the previous model, and it offers less resistance to the air flow.

Elegant ambience, new high-class options

The interior of the new Porsche Cayman continues along the lines of current Porsche sports car design and adds value to the sport coupé. In its new optional features as well: for the first time, a high-end Burmester sound system can be ordered which is individually tuned for the Cayman. Other new and optional features that overcome class boundaries are Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the keyless Entry & Drive system.

An especially exclusive ambience is created by the optional bi-colour leather packages that can be delivered; the base colour agate grey may be combined with lime gold, gravel grey or amber orange.

The centre console that ascends towards the front with its motorsport-like high-set gear shifter gives the driver the feeling of being more fully integrated in the interior. Controls for key vehicle operation functions and settings are arranged in logical groupings on the centre console. They are laid out for quick and intuitive control of individual functions.

New ergonomics support sporty driving

The new ergonomics of the Porsche Cayman and its more precise shifting now offer drivers even better conditions for quick and effortless gear shifts. The ascending centre console and the driver's seat position ensure a short distance between the steering wheel and the gearshift lever. The new gear indicator in the tachometer shows which gear is engaged, and the upshifting recommendation in the instrument cluster gives the driver feedback on a style of driving that optimises fuel efficiency.

The standard CDR audio system with its seven-inch touchscreen that is centrally located further upwards is very easy to see and offers convenient access to many different functions. The three classic round instruments of the Cayman model series with a centrally positioned tachometer and an ignition switch to the left of the steering wheel make the connection to a familiar cockpit environment. New is the high-resolution 4.6-inch VGA multifunction screen in the instrument on the right. Along with the most important trip computer functions, it also includes a map display for the optional PCM with navigation module.

The driver and passenger sit on new sport seats. They offer very good comfort for long-distance touring and very good lateral support for a dynamic style of driving. The standard sport seats have mechanical fore-aft and height adjustments, and the backrests are electrically adjustable. The optional sport seat plus system offers even greater lateral support with larger side panels on the seat cushions and backrests and more pronounced sculpting in the shoulder area. Electric sport seats and adaptive sport seats plus are still offered as options - and both include a memory function.

The car's new extended silhouette also increases the practical utility of the Cayman: the larger rear lid offers better access to the rear bootspace, and cargo capacity of the two-seater has been increased by 15 litres to 425 litres when loaded to the roof. An eye-catching feature that is revealed when the rear lid is opened is the new aluminium panel that extends across the engine compartment cover between the two filler caps for coolant and oil. A luggage partition bar that is also made of brushed aluminium laterally spans the space behind the head restraints.

New sound experience: Porsche Cayman introduces Burmester sound system to the class

The new top option among the sound systems is a special "made in Germany" system that Porsche developed for the Cayman together with Burmester. Based on experience acquired from systems in the Panamera, Cayenne and 911 Carrera, this new system attains a total acoustic power and sound quality that are excellent for the sports car segment. This is impressively demonstrated by the system's performance figures: twelve individually controlled loudspeakers, including an active "body-in-white" subwoofer with a 140 mm diameter diaphragm and integrated 300 Watt Class-D amplifier, and twelve amplifier channels with a total output power of over 800 Watt.

Greater comfort and safety: ACC with Porsche Active Safe

For Cayman models with Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), Porsche now offers a new upgrade option for driving convenience and safety: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that includes the safety function Porsche Active Safe (PAS). ACC operation is based on a radar sensor located in the middle of the front body panel, which acquires objects in the driving lane over a range of up to 200 metres. ACC maintains a speed-dependent distance to a vehicle ahead in traffic over four preselectable stages, and it automatically adjusts driving speed up to a vehicle stop. This relieves the workload of drivers in traffic jam situations and in slow-moving traffic.

PAS builds on this system and can help to avoid front-end collisions - even when ACC is switched off. It uses the front radar system to continually monitor traffic for much slower vehicles ahead. If the system detects an impending hazardous situation, the brake system is preconditioned, and the brake assistant is sensitised. If the situation becomes more critical, PAS outputs visual and acoustic warnings, and the driver is alerted to the need to intervene by a jolt in the brake pedal. If the driver does not react with appropriate braking, the system can increase braking pressure up to hard braking, depending on the situation.

Driving without car keys: Porsche Entry & Drive

Porsche Entry & Drive is being offered for the first time in the class of the Porsche Cayman. The system enables keyless and convenient unlocking and locking of the doors and bootlid as well as engine starting. As soon as the driver touches the door handle, the Porsche Entry & Drive queries an access code that is saved in the key. If it is correct, the door is unlocked. Similarly, when the driver approaches the sensor zone at the front or rear of the car, the boot lid in that zone is unlocked and can be opened.

2013 Porsche Panamera Platinum Edition


Starting at the end of November 2012, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is offering a particularly exclusive and elegant version of the Panamera: the Platinum Edition. The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S assumes top position in the Porsche SUV model range with its engine power of 550 hp (405 kW). With its complex active chassis, the top athlete in SUV clothing surpasses the driving performance of many sports cars. All of the basic Cayenne properties such as versatile offroad capabilities, high ride comfort and superior towing power have been preserved without exception. Its NEDC fuel consumption of 11.5 litres per 100 km is the same as that of the Cayenne Turbo, which makes it more fuel-efficient in relation to its engine power. The new Turbo S model has an extra 50 hp of power compared to the Cayenne Turbo, as well as a torque boosted from 700 Nm to 750 Newton metres, and it converts them into faster acceleration and a higher top speed. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes just 4.5 seconds (-0.2 seconds), and the SUV accelerates to a top speed of 283 km/h (+ 5 km/h).

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S was systematically configured for maximum dynamic performance. Therefore, it incorporates all relevant control systems as standard equipment. The standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels with coloured Porsche badges were exclusively designed for the Cayenne Turbo S; their inside surfaces are painted in high-gloss black.

Porsche designers created bi-colour leather packages in new colours and colour patterns specifically for the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. These interior features are available in black/carrera red or black/luxor beige colour combinations. The bi-colour leather packages that are reserved for the new top model were extended by adding decorative seams in the contrasting colours carrera red and luxor beige. The space, comfort and clear layout of an SUV; the driving fun, dynamics and agility of a sports car: the new Porsche Cayenne GTS is a fusion of two worlds. Focused on sporty performance, the new model combines greater engine output, more dynamic power development and a firmer chassis setup with a lower-slung body yet with a high degree of comfort. Thanks to its own unique setup, the Porsche Cayenne GTS succeeds in transmitting these characteristics to its passengers with particular intensity, stimulating all their senses: unadulterated driving fun. As an uncompromising extension of the GTS concept, introduced into the SUV model line with the predecessor model, the Porsche Cayenne GTS is not merely positioned between the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo but is a model with its own distinctive character developed from tip to toe for emotionally-charged sportiness. The sporty focus was also behind the success of the predecessor model. 15,766 units of the first generation Porsche Cayenne GTS were sold, accounting for a 17 per cent share of total Cayenne sales throughout the period it was on sale.

The sporty character of the new Cayenne GTS is evident not only in the performance but is also clearly underlined by its exterior. The typical characteristic of the Porsche Cayenne GTS is the front section with its larger cooling air intakes - similar to the Cayenne Turbo - and a distinctive front apron with additional air intakes. Also borrowed from the Cayenne Turbo is the light graphics with characteristic night design recognisable by the front lights in the outer air intakes and by the four LED spots for the daytime running lights in the main headlights. The Cayenne GTS features the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as standard.

It is an enhancement of the Bi-Xenon lighting system with integrated dynamic and static cornering lights, speed-dependent driving light control in the guise of country road and motorway light as well as adverse weather light. The inner bezels of the headlights are finished in black.

Special side skirts and distinctly wider wheel arches in body colour shape the side view, enhanced by the window frames in black high-gloss paint. The attention-getter at the rear end is the dominant roof spoiler with twin-wing profile. This increases the downforce on the rear axle even further. The sporty contrasting theme is rounded off by the high-gloss black trim strip on the tailgate, tinted LED tail lights and the two black twin tailpipes.

Power house: eight-cylinder engine with enhanced performance

The new Porsche Cayenne GTS's engine is the locus of this emotional sportiness. The Cayenne GTS's power unit is the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in the Cayenne model line and stands for uncompromising power and emotionality. Enhanced driving pleasure on many levels was the goal being pursued in the redevelopment of the 4.8-litre V8 engine. The 20 hp increase in power output compared with the power unit in the Cayenne S is accompanied by an increase in torque of 15 Newton metres; the crankshaft now generates its maximum power of 515 Newton metres at 3,500 rpm.

To make work easier for the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine, the engineers in creased the lift of the intake valves by one millimetre to eleven millimetres. The new camshaft required as a result has steeper and higher cams, the valve springs also being strengthened. The valve timing has also been completely reworked as well as the entire engine control. The crank shaft now turns a further five degrees before the intakes and outlets open and shut respectively.

Responsive engine control with sporty feedback

But what sets the eight-cylinder engine in the GTS apart is not the sheer power in itself but the way in which it delivers it. It is more directly responsive yet to the throttle, providing the driver with an even more intense acoustic feedback. The GTS engine's performanceoriented control is apparent in the way the power unit rapidly revs up, right from the very moment the engine starts. When driving, it ensures an even faster build-up in torque and thus a noticeably quicker responsiveness. The modified engine management system also enables a brief, partial cylinder deactivation when changing gear, with the engine speed adjusting even faster to the transmission speed and with gear change times shortened even further. Especially in Sport mode, which can be selected by the corresponding button on the centre console, the engine control extracts every last ounce of performance potential from the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine, which the Porsche Cayenne GTS acknowledges with an engine sound akin to that of a racing car engine. When the foot is taken off the accelerator, the eight-cylinder engine responds with a low-frequency rumble and with the so-called backfire when changing down.

Sport car-like acoustic sound experience

The Porsche Cayenne GTS's sound experience is intensified yet further by the specially tuned intake and exhaust acoustics: it is the first Cayenne to leave its occupants in no doubt whatsoever about its breathing rate, courtesy of its twin-flow Sound Symposer system. The new system comprises two acoustic channels terminating in the A-pillars. When the driver activates the Sport button, the channels are opened, directing the sound of the intake pulses into the car body cavities.

Just what greater performance sounds like is also demonstrated by the sports exhaust system, featured as standard, also activated by pressing the Sport button to improve the gas flow rate. Up until the rear silencer, the sports exhaust system, as does the standard exhaust system, comprises two primary and two main catalytic convertors and a centre silencer. The main silencer ensures a meaty and full-bodied acoustic impression. Two exhaust flaps are to be found between the rear silencers and tailpipe covers respectively, which are activated by the sport button and can be controlled as a function of load, speed, engine speed and gear. When open, they improve engine performance by means of improved gas flow rate, the sports exhaust system announcing this loud and clear with its powerful sporty sound.

And yet another feature sets a Porsche GTS engine apart: its Porsche Intelligent Performance. The auto start/stop function, featured as standard, illustrates that efficiency plays a big role even in such a sporty vehicle as the Porsche Cayenne GTS. Despite its greater power output and sportier setup, the Cayenne GTS's overall fuel consumption is only 0.2 litre higher than that of the Cayenne S.

Faster gear changes: modified Tiptronic and shorter final drive ratios

Power transmission is handled by the eight-speed Tiptronic S as standard. While the automatic transmission's drive ratios remain unchanged, the gear changes are shorter and sportier. Shorter front and rear axle drive ratios exploit the engine's free-revving characteristics to achieve superior acceleration performance.

In addition to the pronounced starting torque, the new Porsche Cayenne GTS also features torque enhancement. Not only does this make for a meatier sound but for higher performance as well. When changing up into the next higher gear, the torque of the high revving engine is harnessed for superior acceleration by especially rapid closing of the torque converter lockup clutch. The crisp gear changes feel even sportier and the performance is even higher. The torque enhancement function is only active in sport mode.

Thanks to intelligent shifting programmes, the driver is able to selectively influence the shift behaviour of the Tiptronic S by means of the accelerator and brake pedals. Rapid accelerator pedal movements immediately move the shift points to the dynamic map - without any kickdown. Consequently, quickly removing the foot from the accelerator, for example before bends, suppresses the overrun upshift. In addition, mid-corner gearshifts are also prevented. Under heavy braking, the Tiptronic S quickly changes down into the lower gear to exploit the engine braking effect. Gradient recognition ensures greater uphill acceleration capability and greater downhill engine braking torque.

To ensure the greatest possible sporty driving style immediately when activating the sport button, the shifting characteristic curves of the Tiptronic S switch more quickly into the sportier map than in normal mode. Depending on the driving style and speed, gears seven and eight are no longer engaged and braking downshifts now already occur at lower deceleration in order to be able to improve subsequent acceleration. In normal mode, Tiptronic S allows an especially economic driving style and reduces fuel consumption by shifting up early and shifting down late.

PTM active all-wheel drive, available with PTV Plus as an option

The Porsche Cayenne GTS applies power to the road by means of the Porsche Traction Management system. The PTM with active all-wheel drive involves the rear axle being driven directly. The multiple-plate clutch, electronically-controlled by an electric motor, handles the fully variable distribution of the propulsive force to the front axle with no standard distribution. If the slip on the rear axle increases, for example when accelerating, the multiple-plate clutch intervenes more vigorously to transfer more propulsive force to the front wheels.

By permanently monitoring the driving state, the system can respond both to different driving situations as well as to the driver's wishes. This enables an additional, driving dynamics-oriented control of the active all-wheel drive, capable of responding both situationally and even preventively, nipping undesired axle slip in the bud.

If desired, the driving dynamics characteristics of the Porsche Cayenne GTS can be optimised yet further with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) as an optional extra. It boosts driving dynamics and driving stability, achieving this through variable torque distribution to the rear wheels as well as an electronically-controlled rear differential lock. Depending on the steering angle and speed, accelerator pedal position and yaw rate and speed, PTV Plus improves steering behaviour and precision by means of precisely modulated braking interventions on the inside rear wheel in question. This results in a direct and dynamic steering action as the car enters the bend. At high speed as well as in bends taken at speed and when the wheels are spinning, the electronically controlled rear differential lock also ensures even greater driving stability.

Sportily firm yet comfortable

The Porsche Cayenne GTS's outstanding driving dynamics depend crucially on the completely new chassis setup, with lowered body: with steel spring suspension featured as standard, the Porsche Cayenne GTS is 24 millimetres lower than the Cayenne S and 20 millimetres lower with the optional air suspension. The lower ride height gives the new Cayenne GTS a lower centre of gravity, with a perceptible impact on agility when cornering.

Steel spring suspension or air suspension available as an option with PASM adaptive damping system

Both with steel spring suspension and also with the air suspension available as an option, the Cayenne GTS features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The PASM handles the electronic adjustment of the shock absorber system and actively and continuously controls the damping forces depending on the state of the road surface and driving style. Thanks to a new PASM control strategy coupled with modified chassis mounts, the Porsche Cayenne GTS offers an unprecedented spread between sportiness and comfort. The driver can choose between them at the push of a button. In addition, air suspension, available as an option, allows five different height levels, which are entirely tailored to the performance of the Cayenne GTS and are markedly different from those of a Cayenne S with air suspension.

The RS Spyder design 20-inch wheels further contribute to the Porsche Cayenne GTS's distinctly sporty handling. Their offset is calculated to place the outer edge of the wheels flush with the wider wheel arches. As the effect of this change is to set the wheels further outboard, the rear axle track width of the new Cayenne GTS is 17 millimetres greater than that of the Cayenne S.

Roll stabilisation as an optional extra

The new Porsche Cayenne GTS's driving dynamics can be further enhanced by air suspension with PASM and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation system that can be twinned with this chassis variant. PDCC restricts the vehicle's tendency to lean when cornering, almost completely neutralising it in virtually every driving situation. The PDCC's lighting fast reflexes coupled with active stabilisers enable it to generate supporting forces before the body can start to tilt when cornering.

The PDCC works by means of hydraulic swivel motors, integrated into the front and rear axle stabilisers. Depending on steering angle and lateral acceleration, the two halves of each anti-roll bar rotate further in opposition to each other, thus generating forces that counteract the vehicle's tendency to lean. This enables both an extremely comfortable as well as an extremely sporty driving experience, combined with agility of the highest order in every driving speed range as well as optimal cornering behaviour and stable load change behaviour.

New: Sport Chrono Package documents driving dynamics

Porsche is introducing the Sport Chrono Package in the Cayenne GTS as an optional extra in the SUV model line. It comprises a stopwatch on the dashboard and a performance display in the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. The stopwatch or the acceleration sensor enables the higher performance values to be recorded, for example as lap times or lateral and longitudinal acceleration. The PCM supports graphical representation, enabling the times to be analysed, for example.

Superior brake system with ceramic option

The brake system in the Cayenne GTS comes from the Cayenne S and handles even arduous demands, such as those encountered during sporty driving, with aplomb. Six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes and 360 millimetre diameter brake discs are fitted at the front. Braking power at the rear of the Cayenne GTS is provided by four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes and 330 millimetre diameter discs. All brake callipers are painted red, another point of detail in which the Porsche Cayenne GTS differs from the Cayenne S with its silver callipers.

A further optional extra is the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system. The PCCB is visually recognisable by its yellow-painted brake callipers. The brakes respond even faster and more precisely with significantly less force required on the pedal. The PCCB offers high fading stability, especially when braking at high speeds. Another critical advantage of the ceramic brake system is to be found in the extremely low weight of the disc brakes: they are approximately 50 per cent lighter than grey cast iron discs of comparable construction and size.

Exclusive ambience and sports seats as standard

The fusion of exclusivity and sportiness is also apparent in the Cayenne GTS's interior. It features a leather interior as standard, including numerous Alcantara trims. For example, seat centre panels, the centre console armrest, parts of the door panel as well as the roofliner and pillar trim are executed in Alcantara. The driver and front seat passenger sit on exclusive, eight-way electrically adjustable GTS sports seats. The rear seats with their single seat styling offer rear passengers outstanding side support. With its shift paddles, the SportDesign steering wheel is poised for manual gear changes and blends harmoniously with the puristic interior. The SportDesign steering wheel is also available with a steering wheel rim in Alcantara as an optional extra.

Anyone wishing to equip their Porsche Cayenne GTS even more exclusively can choose from optional interior packages available only for the GTS. They include contrasting stitching in Carmine Red or Peridot on the dashboard, door elements, seats and centre console armrest. The embroidered "GTS" lettering on the headrests, the safety belts and the stitching on the foot mats are retained in the corresponding colour and put the finishing touch on the "GTS line" in the interior.

Options: From seat climate control to lane change assist

A rich array of options is available in the Cayenne programme for further personalisation. The range extends from heated and ventilated seats to four-zone climate control, allowing individual climate control of the rear seat positions, to intelligent assistance systems. These include for example the adaptive cruise control with special functions such as overtaking assistance, cornering speed control and distance warning. The Lane Change Assist (LCA) system, also available as an option, uses two radar sensors in the rear bumper to monitor the lanes on the right and left up to 70 metres behind the vehicle, including the blind spots. The Lane Change Assist system therefore enhances safety and comfort, particularly on motorways. The system is available in the 30 to 250 km/h speed range.

Audio entertainment for every requirement

The Porsche Cayenne GTS has at its disposal the latest generation of audio and communication systems. Not only is a BOSE system available but also the High-End Surround Sound System from Burmester. The optional BOSE Surround Sound System includes a total of 14 speakers, a 200 watt active subwoofer with a Class D output stage and 200 millimetre diameter membrane as well as nine amplifier channels, which ensure an impressive sound experience.
