New Opel Adam Rocks is a Faux-Crossover Flavored Concept with a Retractable Roof

GM's European division Opel, and subsequently its Vauxhall counterpart in Britain, will try to kill two birds with one stone at next month's 83rd Geneva Auto Show, where they will present the new Adam Rocks Concept.

The study is based on the production Adam, which has been given a crossover-style makeover while also gaining a sardine can-like retractable fabric roof, similar to that found on the Fiat 500C and Citroen DS3 Cabrio, though, in Opel's case, the rear windshield appears to remain intact.

Riding on a 15mm taller suspension, the rugged-looking Adam Rocks features a 20mm wider stance thanks to a new body kit that adds plastic cladding on all four wheel arches, as well as on the bumpers and side skirts. Front and rear protective plates, a new set of alloy wheels and central exhaust pipe complete the transformation.

“With even bolder design than any other ADAM, the ROCKS is an impressive demonstration of how much more potential for individualization our new small lifestyle car still offers after its market launch. It combines the toughness of a crossover with the coolness of open air driving,” says Malcolm Ward, Opel/Vauxhall Lead Design Director.

2014 Citroen DS3 Cabrio

Citroën DS3 Cabrio is the latest advance in the distinctively styled DS line. A cabrio version of the multi-award winning DS3, this exciting new model features intelligent design and dazzling looks to make top-down driving considerably easier and even more enjoyable.

Launched almost three years ago, DS3 has proved an outstanding success for Citroën with over 200,000 sold worldwide, including more than 36,000 registered in the UK alone. Boasting enhanced personalisation possibilities with a range of roof designs, a series of special editions, a Racing version and Ultra Prestige models, DS3 has played a major role in boosting awareness of the expanding DS line. Overall, sales of DS3, DS4 and DS5 have already topped the 300,000 mark globally in just 30 months.

Citroën DS3 Cabrio boasts all the hallmarks that have made the hatchback so successful - bold styling, sophisticated refinement, extensive personalisation and a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience - combined with the pleasure of al-fresco motoring.

Citroën DS3 Cabrio leads the way for occupant space as the only five-seater in its class and features the biggest boot in the segment at 245-litres VDA. The electrically operated folding roof can be fully opened or closed at speeds of up to 75mph - which is also unique in this segment - and takes just 16 seconds to fully close. Top down driving has never been so easy.

BUYER PROFILE & COMPETITORS

The 'B2' convertible market is dominated by female buyers and Citroën DS3 Cabrio's customer profile will largely reflect existing demand with owners typically aged 35+ with a strong female bias. In this segment, a high proportion of buyers are also 'young at heart' with older, more independent children at home. It will also attract younger couples and single people, both male and female, looking for a vehicle that reflects their personality - offering distinctive styling, prestige, excitement, a sporty drive and a sense of escapism.

The UK is one of the biggest markets for convertibles in Europe and is expected to be one of the principal markets for Citroën DS3 Cabrio. The new models will compete with core 'B2' segment convertible models such as the Fiat 500C and MINI Convertible. Thanks to class-leading occupant space and boot volume, Citroën DS3 Cabrio is also expected to appeal to prospective buyers of convertibles in other market sectors, such as the Mazda MX5 or Renault Mégane CC.

Offering all the pleasure of soft-top motoring without the usual compromises in terms of space, functionality or economy, Citroën DS3 Cabrio offers prospective buyers the opportunity to 'escape the ordinary'.

OUTSIDE IN

Citroën DS3 Cabrio retains the hatchback's unique personality, with the same compact, dynamic proportions and bold styling choices from the 'floating' two-tone roof and 'shark fin' B-pillar to the sculpted front-end with its distinctive LED light signature.

Maintaining the DS line's extensive customisation levels, Citroën DS3 Cabrio is available in seven body colours with three colour-coordinated roof designs for a choice of fourteen combinations. There are nine different wheel styles, to let owners express their personality even further, and buyers can specify 16" or 17" alloys in a range of colours and designs.

Extensive chrome detailing, such as across the top of the boot lid and on the side rubbing strips, highlights the model's charismatic design, with dark tinted rear windows adding a further stylish touch.

At the rear, Citroën DS3 Cabrio boasts an eye-catching three-dimensional LED light signature. The all-new 3D LED tail-light technology was inspired by the designs on Citroën's Revolte and Survolt concept cars. The central part of the light is comprised of a rectangular set of 31 LEDs with semi-reflecting mirrors that reflect the light into 'infinity'. A 15-LED blade on the upper part of the light emphasises the 3D unit and acts as both side and brake lights. A chrome-finished DS logo, in an embossed black DS setting, is also incorporated into the design.

RAISE THE ROOF

One of Citroën DS3 Cabrio's standout features is its electric fully retractable, high quality canvas roof, which can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph. Unique in the segment, this important feature allows drivers to react to the weather without having to stop or slow down - even when they are on the motorway.

A button on the overhead console controls the roof to three positions - intermediate, horizontal and total - with the roof fully opening or closing in just 16 seconds. Even in the horizontal setting, rear passengers get a completely clear view overhead.

The roof is available in three designs - Black, Infinite Blue and Moondust Grey DS Monogramme. The sophisticated Infinite Blue canvas comprises delicate hues of blue and violet. The visual effect is created by a weave of three different coloured threads, one of which is shiny, with each thread reacting differently to changes in light conditions. Referencing products from luxury goods manufacturers, the DS logo featured on the Monogramme canvas roof is a subtle design achieved by contrasting two 'Jacquard' grey tones with a Moondust Grey base.

INSIDE OUT

Inside, Citroën DS3 Cabrio offers a distinctive and sophisticated cabin for both the driver and passengers. There is white LED ambient lighting around the ceiling console and white lights in the instrument cluster. The high quality soft-top material delivers standard-setting soundproofing comparable to DS3 hatchback, with some of the best acoustic insulation against road noise and the elements in its class. When the roof is open, an aerodynamic front deflector provides optimum acoustic comfort by deflecting air currents and preventing air buffeting.

All-new upholstery choices are available, including Granite Blue leather. The décor on the dashboard strip, air vent surrounds and gear knob are colour-coded to the body paint and soft-top. There are six décor choices available - Aluminium effect, Gloss Black, White, Carbon Fibre effect, Infinite Blue and Moondust Grey.

Chrome and leather touches, on the gear knob and gear lever surround, handbrake and steering wheel further exemplify Citroën DS3 Cabrio's premium personality. For a sporty touch, aluminium drilled foot pedals are also available.

CRÉATIVE TECHNOLOGIE ONBOARD

Citroën DS3 Cabrio inherits all the convenient technology of the hatchback, including Citroën's integrated satellite navigation system, eMyWay, which features a high-resolution 7-inch colour widescreen, Europe-wide navigation and Bluetooth® and USB connectivity.

Rear parking sensors are standard across the range, providing added reassurance when parking with the roof down. For added occupant comfort, whatever the weather, automatic digital air conditioning is also available.

A CLASS APART

At 3.95m long, 1.71m wide and 1.46m high, Citroën DS3 Cabrio offers virtually the same amount of occupant space as DS3 hatchback and even retains the 60/40 split-folding rear bench. Accommodating up to five adults, which is a unique achievement in this class, all three rear occupants benefit from ample leg room and individual head rests.

Citroën DS3 Cabrio offers a class leading boot with a capacity of 245-litres VDA. The tailgate also features an original opening mechanism, which uses a circular upwards motion allowing the boot to be fully opened even when parked close to obstructions. For loading larger items, the split-folding rear seats can be tumbled forward with ease.

Boot Volume Comparison
  • Citroën DS3 Cabrio - 245 l
  • MINI Convertible - 125 l
  • Fiat 500C - 185 l

AIR & DYNAMICS

Adding to a range praised for its enjoyable handling - and boasting a strong WRC pedigree - Citroën DS3 Cabrio remains a pleasure to drive with the optimised architecture retaining the agile and responsive feel of the original DS3.

Featuring the same technical platform and high-precision drivetrains as the hatchback, with additional strengthening at the rear for maximum rigidity, Citroën DS3 Cabrio delivers the same eager handling that makes the DS3 range so enjoyable behind the wheel. At the same time Citroën DS3 Cabrio offers the highest levels of comfort, control and safety, putting the driver firmly in control on the road.

Citroën DS3 Cabrio's engineers focused on efficiency and minimising weight during the design process. The new model is just 25kg heavier than the hatchback. Typically convertibles are around 100kg more than their equivalent hatchback versions.

The rear spoiler and deflectors on the rear quarter-lights mean the aerodynamics - SCx of 0.69m2 - are identical to the hatchback with the roof closed, enhancing the model's performance and helping to reduce CO2 emissions.

EFFICIENT POWER

Citroën DS3 Cabrio will be available from launch with a choice of three refined and efficient Euro V petrol engines - VTi 82, VTi 120 and THP 155. The VTi engines are mated with 5-speed manual gearboxes and the THP 155 is twinned with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Fuel economy is up to 57.6mpg on a combined cycle, with CO2 emissions from just 112g/km.

A Gear Efficiency Indicator (GEI) is also fitted as standard that signals the optimum moment to change gear - saving fuel and encouraging economically efficient driving.

SAFETY FIRST

Citroën DS3 Cabrio maintains the high levels of safety offered by the DS3 hatchback range, including:
  • ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Driver's, front passenger's, front lateral & curtain airbags
  • Cruise control with speed limiter
  • Isofix child seat anchorage points
  • Citroën's award-winning eTouch Emergency & Assistance system, which automatically or manually makes geo-localised emergency or assistance calls using a built-in SIM card, for rapid intervention in the event of an accident or if the car is immobilised

PRICES & TRIMS

Citroën DS3 Cabrio is available in the DS line's three signature trim levels - DSign, DStyle & DSport - with ownership starting at £15,045 for the VTi 82 DSign rising to £19,675 for the THP 155 DSport. The most popular model is forecast to be the VTi 120 DStyle at £17,425 and the sales split is expected to be approximately 65% retail and 35% fleet/business.

Boasting a 6.5-liter V12 that churns out a heady 690 horsepower, there's little wondering why the cars are so popular. But with its finicky carbon fiber rooflet, $3,700 gas guzzler tax and and an MSRP that sits considerably higher than the hardtop version's price tag, the Aventador Roadster requires a very specific type of buyer. Lamborghini isn't saying how many of the new dropheads have been sold, but we're told hand raisers won't get their keys until mid-summer at the earliest.

If you need a refresher on what makes this particular Lamborghini worth nearly half a million dollars, you can check out the photos and videos from the machine's unveiling in Miami here.

Joe Flacco wins C7 Corvette along with MVP honors

As part of a longstanding tradition, the MVP of Super Bowl XLVII, Joe Flacco, quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, was given a new car directly after the game and trophy celebrations. For 2013, that car is a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, and it was presented to Flacco by Rick Flick of Banner Chevrolet, a dealership in New Orleans that was wiped out by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 before returning to prominence as the only Chevy dealer in Orleans Parish.

Last year, Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning took home a 2012 Corvette GS Centennial Edition. Manning also won in 2008, when he selected a Cadillac Escalade Hybrid as his reward. In 2011, quarterback Aaron Rodgers accepted the keys to a Camaro convertible.

Though we're most definitely an auto-obsessed group, we did watch the Big Game along with nearly everyone else in America. And we've gotta say, as if winning the Super Bowl and receiving the Tiffany-designed Pete Rozelle Trophy wasn't enough for the multi-millionaire MVP athletes, a brand-new C7 seems like an awfully generous prize. Scroll down below for an official announcement from General Motors.

Super Bowl XLVII MVP Takes Home Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Presented by local Chevrolet dealer who rebounded after Hurricane Katrina
2013-02-04

NEW ORLEANS – The honor of awarding the Super Bowl XLVII MVP Award was given to Rick Flick of New Orleans' Banner Chevrolet, who knows a thing or two about comebacks. Banner Chevrolet, a part of Flick's family for 40 years, was wiped out by Hurricane Katrina and was the first business to reopen in New Orleans East after the devastating 2005 storm. On behalf of Chevrolet, the official sponsor of the Super Bowl XLVII MVP Award, Flick presented quarterback Joe Flacco with a 2014 Corvette Stingray on Monday in recognition of his effort in leading the Baltimore Ravens' to a 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

"Banner Chevrolet and the entire city of New Orleans have been through so much since the storm, we felt this was a small gesture to bring the comeback story full circle," said Alan Batey, GM vice president of U.S. Sales, Service and Marketing. "With the Super Bowl in his backyard, we couldn't think of a better guy to have the honor of awarding the MVP with his Corvette Stingray."

Banner Chevrolet was of the largest losses ever recorded for a dealership in the United States and recently completed a massive multimillion-dollar renovation with state-of-the-art technology. Banner is the only Chevrolet dealer in Orleans Parrish.

"We lost our entire inventory of 650 new Chevrolets and 120 pre-owned vehicles during Katrina," Flick said. "I'm happy we are still a vital part of this community today and I can be here to represent the people of Chevrolet and its dealerships as we celebrate the Super Bowl MVP."

The Super Bowl MVP receives the Pete Rozelle Trophy, a silver trophy made by Tiffany & Co., and the Corvette Stingray.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower (335 kW) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 Nm). It is also the most capable standard model ever, able to accelerate from 0-60 in less than four seconds and achieve more than 1g in cornering grip. It is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Corvette, exceeding the EPA-estimated 26 mpg of the current model.

Fifth Gear's Season 22 Premiere Airs Next Monday, Vicki Fights Jets With a Boxster S

You wait ages for the new season of a new TV car show and, typically, two come along at the same time. After Top Gear’s premiere on January 27 on BBC, Fifth Gear’s debut episode of the 22nd season will air in a week’s time, on Monday, February 11 on the Discovery Channel.

The first two teasers about one of the first episodes’ stories are now available. They include Vicki Butler-Henderson, a very yellow Porsche Boxster S, an airfield runway and the world’s largest civilian aerobatic display team.

Yellow Porsche Boxster S
Yellow Porsche Boxster S

It’s the French-based Breitling Jet Team, which flies seven Aero L-39 “Albatros” jets. The L-39 is a Czech-built trainer that has been produces in nearly 2,800 units and has served with 30 air force units around the world.

As it is being replaced by the newer L-159, many have been sold to civilians; in fact, they are very popular in the States, too, due to their relatively low cost, which ranges between US$200,000-300,000, and probably the most famous owner is auto industry exec Bob Lutz.

You can view the videos of Vicki explaining the challenge and making gunning the 315HP open-top Porsche in the runway right after the break.

SRT Announces Return to Le Mans 24-Hour Race with New Viper GTS-R

Even SRT boss Ralph Gilles has admitted that the previous Vipers had an “axe-murderer” kind of demeanor but, despite that, the “snake” has had been quite successful in racing, competing against the best production-based rivals in the world and beating them not only in America but across the globe, too.

One of its greatest triumphs has been finishing in the first two places in its class for three years in a row, from 1998 to 2000, in the most prestigious endurance race in the world: the 24 Hours or Le Mans.

2013 is heralding the return of the Viper to La Sarthe, as SRT Motorsports will field two GTS-R racers in the LM GTE Pro class of the race that will take place on June 22-23.

“Racing is truly a part of the illustrious history of Viper and a proving ground for the SRT brand”, commended Gilles. “Historically, the Viper GTS-R has enjoyed great success at Le Mans, so we couldn’t be more excited and proud to accept the challenge to return to France”.

The new racer is based on the 2013 Viper GTS and has been developed by SRT Motorsports in cooperation with Riley Technologies. It made its debut last year in Mid-Ohio, as a part of a four-race test in order for a full-on assault on the GT class of the 2013 American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

Technology on the inside

Inside Renault Scénic XMOD, the driver enjoys a cockpit-like environment with an exclusive fixed centre console and an array of controls. The rotary control for the all-new Extended Grip traction control system and the multi-directional joystick control for the multimedia system are both easy to reach. Featuring a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) digital display, the dashboard is dominated by the fully connected Renault R-Link touchscreen multimedia system. The top-of-the-range version of XMOD includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium-capped pedals and gear lever knob and new interior appointments. Rounding out the offer is new stitched upholstery and Leather/Alcantara Pack.

Extended grip underneath

Renault Scénic XMOD is the first vehicle in the Renault range to feature the all-new Extended Grip system. This advanced traction control system enables the vehicle to grip the roadconfidently under difficult driving conditions (snow, mud, sand, etc.). Manually activating the rotary control positioned on the centre console, the driver can choose from three types of assistance.

In 'Expert' mode, Extended Grip manages the braking system, while leaving the driver in full control of the engine torque. The 'Road' mode offers conventional traction control settings. It automatically reconnects at speeds of over 40kph. The 'Loose Ground' mode optimises braking control and engine torque control as a function of available grip.

Plus all the DNA of Renault Scénic

Renault Scénic XMOD retains the key features which have made Scénic the benchmark in the compact MPV segment. Its boot capacity is up to 555 litres, one of the biggest in its class. No less than 71 litres of additional stowage space are cleverly spread around the cabin. Renault Scénic XMOD offers simple, effective and fast modularity: the seats are independent, folding and removable to provide a host of seating configurations for the occupants. Renault Scénic XMOD will be produced at the Douai plant in France.
