2014 VW Golf GTI Revealed in Production Guise, Available in 220PS and 230PS Trims

Welcome to the new-old, or what Volkswagen prefers to call the seventh generation of the Golf GTI, which was unveiled today in final production trim following the release of a thinly disguised concept study at last year's Paris Motor Show.

As with the regular Golf MK7 hatchbacks, you'll be forgiven if you're having a hard time telling the new GTI apart from the current model, as VW has followed an extremely conservative evolutionary approach with the design.

The new sports hatch gets all the usual styling trinkets we've come to expect from GTI models, like the red accent line on the grille, which now extends into the headlamps, honeycomb grille inserts, smoked (LED) tail lamps, a rear spoiler, twin pipes, side sills, a diffuser and different set of 17-inch alloy wheels shod in 225/45 size tires.

The same applies for the interior with the classic tartan pattern fabric for the standard sport seats, a flat bottom steering wheel, black headliner, and red ambience lighting.

What's different about the latest Golf GTI is that it is based on VW's newest MQB platform that helps sheds 42kg (93 pounds) over the outgoing model for a base curb weight of 1,351kg (2,978 pounds)

It also gets a newer 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder unit that's offered in two power levels, 217hp (220PS) for the base model and 227hp (230PS) for the GTI Performance version, which also features a front axle differential lock.

Available transmission options include a standard 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic.

VW quotes a 0-100 km/h (62mph) sprint time of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155mph) for the 230PS model with a manual gearbox, which compares to the current 210PS Golf GTI's 6.9 seconds and 240km/h (149mph).

In Germany, advance ordering for the new Golf GTI Mk7 will begin on March 5, the same day that the car will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, with prices starting at €28,350 or about US$37,000

Volkswagen Unveils Production 0.9lt/100km or 261MPG XL1 Plug-in Hybrid

As promised, Volkswagen has taken the super-frugal XL1 from concept car to production model, with its world premiere to take place at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The radical two-seater model is dubbed the most fuel-efficient production car in the world returning an amazingly low fuel consumption of 0.9 l/100 km, which is the equivalent of 261 mpg US and 313mpg UK, with CO2 emission of just 21g/km. As with other European plug-in hybrid models, these value includes the constant use of the electric motor.

So, how does the XL1 achieve such an impressive fuel economy? For starters, there's the plug-in hybrid powertrain that comprises a 0.8-liter two-cylinder TDI diesel engine rated at 47hp (48PS), an electric motor delivering 20kW (27HP or 27PS), a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission and a lithium-ion battery.

Then we have its compact dimensions at 3,888 mm long, 1,665 mm wide and just 1,153 mm tall, its super slippery body made in part from carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) with a Cd rating of just 0.189 (the latest Prius has a Cd of 0.25), and its lightweight construction with a kerb weight of only 795 kg or 1,753 pounds.

VW claims the XL1 can hit a restricted top speed of 160 km/h (100mph) and accelerate to 100 km/h (62mph) in a respectful 12,7 seconds.

Unlike the tandem seating position of VW's first 1-litre concept cars presented in 2002 and in 2009, in the XL1, two occupants sit slightly offset, side by side, almost like as in a conventional vehicle.

Among other notable highlights are the XL1's gullwing-style doors, the use of cameras instead of exterior and interior mirrors projecting surroundings in LCD screens, and the ability to travel around 30 miles on a single battery charge.

Volkswagen hasn't announced pricing and availability details yet, but it is widely believed that the Germans will offer the XL1 as a lease car in limited numbers.

At the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show, Volkswagen is presenting the latest version of this extreme athlete whose 135 kW / 184 PS TDI engine already complies with the challenging EU-6 emissions standard today.

The first VW Golf GTD in 1982 revolutionised the segment of compact diesel passenger cars with its turbodiesel, sporty tuning and its customised features in the style of the Golf GTI. It is being followed up this year by the most powerful "GTD" ever that is based on the seventh generation Golf. With a power of 135 kW / 184 PS, the new VW Golf GTD can be recommended as a car that is as much a dynamic performer as a fuel-efficient long-distance touring car. In the version with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 230 km/h Volkswagen consumes just 4.2 litres per 100 km; this combined fuel consumption equates to CO2 emissions of just 109 g/km. With the optional 6-speed DSG, fuel consumption is 4.7 l/100 km (two-door: 119 g/km CO2; four-door: 122 g/km CO2). Also impressive is its torque of 380 Nm, which is already available from 1,750 rpm.

Visually, the Volkswagen Golf GTD makes its appearance with its smoked LED rear lights with LED licence plate illumination and chrome dual tailpipes. 17-inch GTD wheels with 225/45 tyres, side sill trim, diffuser, sport suspension and a large roof spoiler round out the car's overall dynamic impression.

Numerous distinctive GTD characteristics also mark the interior: along with top sport seats in tartan pattern ("Clark"), a black roofliner, sport steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and foot support, there are also a GTD gear shift grip, GTD trim strips and a GTD instrument cluster. Other features guarantee the necessary comfort on long trips; they include: progressive steering, white ambience lighting, automatic "Climatronic" climate control, ParkPilot front and rear, winter pack and "Composition Touch" radio system. Standard body colours offered for the Volkswagen Golf GTD are "Tornado Red", "Black" and "Pure White".

The new Golf GTD is available in Germany at an entry-level price of 29,350 euros, and orders begin on the 5th of March, 2013.

Early Reveal for New All-Electric Volkswagen Golf-e Mk7

Volkswagen is expanding its range of Golf Mk7 models with a new pure electric version named the Golf-e, seen in these pictures for the first time ahead of a world premiere at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show on March 5.

The German brand hasn't officially released details yet, but Spanish newspaper El Mundo has more than enough information to cure your curiosity.

On the outside, the only telltale signs that this Golf VII is battery-powered are the covered upper and the reshaped lower grilles, along with the mildly modified head- and tail-lamps, while inside, VW replaced the tachometer and the two smaller gauges in the instrument panel with new meters providing relevant information. The LCD screen of the infotainment system was also updated accordingly.

The newspaper says the Golf-e is fitted with an electric motor producing an output of 115hp and an instant torque figure of 270Nm (199 lb-ft), good enough to accelerate the front-wheel drive model to 100km/h (62mph) in 11.8 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 135km/h (84mph), in order to conserve energy.

Electric juice comes from a 26.5 kWh lithium ion battery positioned under the rear seats. The report says it does not eat away any boot space, which remains the same as the regular Golf hatchback. What it does do along with the electric motor is add 205kg or 452 pounds over the equivalent internal combustion engine model.

The battery can be charged in 20 minutes using the quick charging system with a three-phase current, or in five hours using a household wall socket, in which case, it offers a driving range of up to 175 kilometers or 109 miles, depending on the driving style and road conditions.

At the heart of the new range-topping cabriolet is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine producing 265 PS, connected to a standard six-speed DSG gearbox transmitting power to the front wheels. Design cues include a bespoke front bumper with gloss-black grille and 'R' logo, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with black housings, gloss-black door mirror casings and black-painted brake callipers with R logo. Side sill extensions, a gloss black rear diffuser framed by chrome-tipped exhausts either side and smoked LED tail lights complete the look.

Bespoke 'R' suspension lowers the ride by 25 mm in comparison with the standard Golf Cabriolet. Wheels are 18- or 19-inch 'Talladega' alloy wheels in either 'Sterling Silver' or optionally 'High-gloss Black'.

The interior features four individual sports seats in 'Vienna Cool Leather' and 'R' logos in the head restraints, while the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake grip and gear lever all have contrasting grey stitching. The pedals have brushed aluminium caps, while the doors and dashboard feature 'Silver Lane' aluminium decorative inlays.

Standard specification includes RCD 310 DAB radio with MDI (multi-device interface) and Bluetooth telephone connectivity. As on all Golf Cabriolet models, the fully electric insulated hood is operated by a switch in the centre console, and can be lowered in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 18 mph (and raised in 11.0 seconds).

The Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet will be available to order in spring 2013, priced at £38,770 RRP OTR. The Golf Cabriolet range costs from £21,040 for the entry-level S 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, rising to £30,765 for the GTI 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS with DSG gearbox.

Volkswagen launches a Beetle designed solely with dynamics in mind: the new GSR. The exclusive, powerful 155 kW / 210 PS model will take centre stage at its world premiere at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Limited edition: 3,500 cars; worldwide. GSR - a quaint abbreviation with a legendary predecessor: the "Yellow/Black Racer" based on the Beetle 1303 S. And only 3,500 cars of the earlier model were produced as well. With respect to the look of the Beetle GSR, Volkswagen has systematically re-interpreted the concept of the 1970s GSR for the modern era. Just like the GSR from days gone by, the body of the new version is yellow. The bonnet and the boot lid of the 1973 Beetle were painted in matt black, as were the bumpers. Black trim strips underneath the side windows and black/yellow side stripes above the doorsills rounded off the look. Now, yellow and black are the link between old and new - the bonnet and the boot lid of the new Volkswagen Beetle GSR are black once again, however the roof and the exterior mirror trims are also black on the new model. Black/yellow stripes with "GSR" lettering ensure a unique silhouette above the side sills. Yellow painted bumpers in new R-Line design and a yellow/black rear spoiler complete the GSR look. As opposed to the older Beetle, the Beetle GSR can also be ordered in "Platinum Grey / Black" as an alternative.

The 15-inch steel wheels (with 175 size tyres) which were commonly used 40 years ago, even for sporty cars, and the "Tornado" 19-inch alloy wheels (painted black) with 235/40 tyres on the VW Beetle GSR are worlds apart.

The black/yellow interior of the GSR from days gone by featured a leather sports steering wheel and sports seats for an extra-dynamic Beetle performance.

Four decades later, it is the ergonomically sophisticated, R-Line racing track sports seats (with fabric covers and contrasting yellow stitching; US version in black leather), a high-grip leather sports steering wheel (again with contrasting yellow stitching) with R-Line logo and a limited edition badge with the special edition number (1 to 3,500) which give the GSR its special character. The car also boasts an R-Line dash pad (designer panel for the dashboard), GSR gear stick, leather handbrake lever and black floor mats with contrasting yellow embroidery.

40 years ago, the yellow/black Beetle needed precisely 50 PS to turn the world of compact cars on its head. But this world has long been turning much faster. The new Volkswagen Beetle GSR with its 210 PS engine needs just 7.3 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h (0-60 mph in 6.6 s). It has a top speed of 229 km/h (130 mph). The torque characteristic of the VW Beetle GSR is even more impressive than the pure road performance. From as low as 1,700 rpm, the turbo engine achieves its maximum torque of 280 Nm; the value remains at this high level up to 5,200 rpm. However, despite this, the car records an average consumption of 7.3 l/100 km which is low in view of its dynamic performance. As an option, the new Beetle GSR can also be ordered anywhere in the world with an automatic 6-speed, dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) as an alternative to the 6-speed manual gearbox.

The combination of performance, design, equipment and the limited number of cars will ensure that the Volkswagen Beetle GSR will quickly become a collector's item. The same was also true of the Beetle 1303 S - today it is one of the most expensive and most sought-after 1970s versions of what was then the most successful car in the world. It will therefore be interesting to see what the VW Beetle GSR will be valued at in the year 2053.

Volkswagen is expanding the new Golf range: following the models with front-wheel drive launched at the end of 2012, the versions with 4MOTION all-wheel drive are now being unveiled. Volkswagen is thus continuing the long tradition of four-wheel drive Golf models - the first Golf with four driven wheels made its debut back in 1986. The new Golf's permanent four-wheel drive system is one of the most modern and efficient of its kind in the world. In this latest version of the Golf 4MOTION Volkswagen is using a four-wheel drive system with an enhanced, fifth-generation Haldex coupling. The intelligently controlled 4MOTION drive weighs 1.4 kilograms less than the previous system, requires no pressure accumulator and reacts extremely quickly to every conceivable influence exerted on it. The result is greater active safety and improved handling.

15 per cent lower fuel consumption

Volkswagen is offering the new VW Golf 4MOTION in Europe in three levels of specification (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline) and with two turbo diesel engines that provide both high torque and great fuel efficiency. The common rail four-cylinder engines deliver 77 kW / 105 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS and consume just 4.5 / 4.7 litres of fuel respectively per 100 kilometres. Just how efficiently the four-wheel drive Golf works is shown by a fuel consumption comparison between the 103 kW / 140 PS version of the old Volkswagen Golf 4MOTION and the new 150 PS model: despite being 10 PS more powerful, the 2013 Golf 4MOTION consumes 0.8 litres (15 per cent) less diesel.

High tech as standard

Like the front-wheel drive versions the new 4MOTION models are equipped as standard with a Stop/Start system and battery regeneration. Also included as standard even on the base version (Trendline) are features such as the four-wheel EDS (electronic differential locks on both axles), the XDS front and rear axle transverse lock, the electronic stabilisation programme, an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, seven airbags, daytime running lights, air conditioning, electric windows front and back, a multi-function display (on-board computer) and a TFT display with touchscreen operation. The premium payable for the permanent four-wheel drive system on the Volkswagen Golf 4MOTION - sold fundamentally as a four-door vehicle - is €1,800 in Germany.
